Learning how to Learn

Dr. Kartha is a faculty member at the Vijaybhoomi School of Science and Technology, where he specializes in teaching math and coding subjects. He possesses an integrated master's degree in chemistry and a PhD in computational chemistry.

Dr. Thejus Kartha, Faculty, Vijaybhoomi School of Science and Technology

How did you transition from chemistry to coding and data science?

Dr. Kartha: That's a question I often get asked. People find it surprising that I moved from chemistry to data science. However, computational chemistry, which was my focus during my PhD, involved using computers and coding rather than traditional laboratory work. This specialisation allowed me to develop strong coding skills, particularly in Python. I became proficient in dealing with servers and working in a server room-like environment. So, my interest and expertise in coding gradually grew alongside my chemistry background.

How do you merge your passion for chemistry with coding and data science?

Dr. Kartha: Chemistry is a vast field with various divisions, including organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and computational chemistry. Computational chemistry, in particular, doesn't involve traditional lab work. Instead, computational chemists focus on using computers for calculations and analysis related to atoms and molecules. This specialisation required strong coding skills, and that's how I delved deeper into coding and data science. It's a fusion of my chemistry background and my interest in computer-based analysis.

Learning how to learn seems to be a crucial skill you've acquired. Could you tell us more about that?

Dr. Kartha:  Learning how to learn has been instrumental in my journey. It's a skill I consider invaluable because it allows me to take up new subjects as a challenge and ensure I'm always ahead of my students. Every time I'm assigned a new topic to teach, I dive into it, spending hours to familiarise myself with the subject matter. This continuous learning process helps me stay on top of my game and provide the best education to my students.

How can an AI or data science student at this university pursue a career in computational chemistry or a related field?

Dr. Kartha: One possible path to enter the field of computational chemistry is by specialising in molecular docking, which is closely linked to AI. This area involves studying the interactions between large proteins, biomolecules, and drugs. Since modelling these interactions is challenging, building an AI model can be beneficial. Pharma companies, in particular, are often involved in molecular docking. Big names such as Novartis and Johnson & Johnson offer job opportunities for individuals skilled in statistical modelling, making it relatively easier for AI students to enter the computational side of the field. Additionally, companies working on advanced materials like batteries also present opportunities in this domain.

Thank you, Dr. Kartha, It was great talking to you!

Dr. Kartha: It was my pleasure. Thank you for having me.
